SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
For high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be conducted at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool.
In the solution treated and aged state, rapid quenching of smaller sections ensures optimal properties. Larger sections or delayed quenching might not achieve peak performance.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed state to Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.
Forgeability/Formability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum 35% reduction is recommended for achieving optimal properties.
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is known for its formidable strength, making it challenging to form at room temperature, even when annealed. However, severe forming operations like bending or stretching can be efficiently performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming is feasible through creep forming within the range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar demonstrates exceptional machinability using austenitic stainless steel machining techniques. By employing slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tooling, and copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids, precise machining can be achieved.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod offers excellent weldability in both the annealed state and the solution and partially aged condition, with aging undertaken during post-weld heat treatment. Strict measures must be taken to avoid contamination with oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should occur in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas protecting the molten metal and heated zones, using a tail shield for optimal results. Spot, seam, and flash welding are also possible without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod can be susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon contamination during processes like forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can decrease ductility, adversely impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod

Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should be avoided with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium across various media are detailed in Table 1. CP Titanium offers superb resistance in multiple environments, including:
Seawater and Brines
Inorganic Salts
Moist *** Gas
Alkaline Solutions
Oxidizing Acids
Organics and Organic Acids
Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP Titanium demonstrates excellent resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions, outperforming stainless steels. CP Titanium avoids crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), regardless of pH, even in highly chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 Titanium shows outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium exhibits exceptional resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
Seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) shows negligible effect on the material. Even the presence of abrasive particles, such as sand, minimally impacts corrosion.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures, shows no significant absorption of hydrogen. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only when three specific conditions are met:
The pH level is < 3 or > 12
Temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
A hydrogen-generating mechanism exists, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit unique immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. However, biofouling can occur in seawater due to titanium's nontoxicity towards marine organisms. This can be minimized by chlorination or increasing water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Titanium demonstrates no decrease in fatigue performance in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
Titanium, located near the noble end of the galvanic series alongside stainless steels, typically acts as the cathode when coupled with other metals. Thus, titanium resists galvanic corrosion but can accelerate the corrosion of the paired metal. Coupling titanium with more noble metals, such as graphite, enhances its passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod maintains its fatigue properties in seawater, showing no degradation. Both fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are identical whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable with the right precautions. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must cover both the OD and ID of the rod, and the material must be free from grease or oil contamination.
Grade 2 Titanium Rod is typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone. Post weld heat treatment is not usually required.
